A sunny day on Portobello Road

It's Saturday morning on Portobello Road and theres never a dull moment, and as soon as the tiniest shard of sunshine graces West London with it's presence, everyone is out to play.

Children smiling, brightly coloured things to peruse, music in the air and the sound of tourists snapping away, helps you lose yourself in a time warp surrounded by trinkets and memorabilia, dating back to the day that this street was put on the map.

The vintage clothes section by Portabello Green (under the Westway) will find you brilliant bargains, and unbeatable unique styles as well as experiencing the joys of al fresco changing rooms!!

 Interesting characters promote their goods

....or just dose in the sunshine!

The area of Portobello was originally a farm, which was named after Puerto Bello in the Caribbean in memory of Admiral Vernon who captured the town in 1739. Prior to this, Portobello Road was known as Green's Lane - a winding country path leading from Kensington Gravel Pits, in what is now Notting Hill Gate, up to Kensal Green in the north.

Generous helpings of fresh fish cooked right in front of you

Since then the area has become built up with houses, shopfronts and the street market, however pub names such as the Portobello Gold and the Portobello Star (navigation) are references to those heady seafaring days off the Spanish Main. One of the Antiques Arcades is known as the Admiral Vernon.

The Robbie Boyd Band are often seen playing on Portobello Road.
Their charming lyrics and friendly smiles entice passers-by to stop, listen and even join in with their brilliant and uplifting songs.

The Robbie Boyd Band

Normally a seven piece band,
(which is definitely worth seeing: www.robbie-boyd.com/gigs)
Portobello Road welcomes a feel-good 'Funky Folk' ensemble of wonderful talent, nostalgic harmonies and tunes to tap your toes to.

So if you're stuck for ideas on a Saturday ...
Whether its a pair of antique boxing gloves, a film camera or a man with no head, Portobello Road will excite the senses and leave you reeling from a fantastic day out in West London.
